The history of International Women’s Day dates back to 1910, when German communist Clara Zetkin offered to establish a special day in honor of fighting for equal rights for women. On March 8 a strike was heldt in New York in 1908.
In Russia, it was first celebrated in St. Petersburg in 1913 with street demonstrations and political readings under the slogan of the struggle for economic and political equality of women. From the first years of the Soviet Union on, March 8th became an official holiday, but it remained a working day until 1965. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the holiday of March 8th remained on the list of public holidays of the Russian Federation. So 8 March turned into one of the most beautiful holidays that welcomes springtime with lots of flowers and loving compliments.
Since, international Women’s Day is a public holiday it is a day off for the general population, and schools and most businesses are closed.
Women’s Day might call the current analog of “Men’s Day” celebrated on February 23rd. On this day, Russian men and women bring gifts and flowers to all the important women in their lives and tell them “Happy March 8th”.
In the Soviet Union, the holiday was meant to commemorate and inspire women in the workforce. Today, it’s become something closer to Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day, all rolled into one. Men show their appreciation for the women in their lives and give them flowers. In the evening, some couples go out for a nice dinner; however it is also common for March 8th to be celebrated in a family circle with a home-made meal and cake.
Many Russian men take over household duties throughout the day, such as washing dishes, preparing meals and looking after children in order to give women a day of rest.
Since most people have the day off work on March 8th, many companies organize a corporate celebration of Women’s Day the day before or after the holiday. Women receive bouquets of flowers and sometimes chocolate or personalized gifts. Cake and champagne are traditional attributes on the festive table.
Tulips are symbols of spring. Along with mimosas and daffodils, tulips are the most popular flowers given on Women’s Day.
There may also be concerts or live performances throughout Russia in celebration of women. On the Moscow subway system, congratulatory messages are broadcast throughout the day. Traffic police stopps random women motorists and presentes them with flowers.
On this day women enjoy being taken care of by their men and children.
It is a wonderful day of womanhood, love and flowers.

The 8th of March
There are many holidays in our country, the 8th of March is one of them.
It is a happy and nice holiday. It is a good tradition in our country to give presents and flowers to women on this day. Each family celebrates this spring holiday. In the morning men go to the shops or markets to buy some flowers. They try to clean flats and help women to cook a holiday dinner.
Sons and daughters help their mothers too: they make a cake, lay the table and wash dishes after holiday dinner.
All the members of the families try to be well dressed on this day.
Some families celebrate the 8th of March going to the theatres and concerts. They buy tickets beforehand. Others prefer to invite guests and stay at home.
There is almost the same holiday in England. It is called Mothers» Day and celebrated also in spring. Sons and daughters come and give gifts to their mothers on this day. If it is not possible to see a mother, one can send presents and cards to her. Flowers and cakes are the traditional gifts for all mothers in England. All women try to be nice and happy on this day.

International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8 in many countries throughout the world. This holiday became a part of the culture of Eastern European countries and countries of the former USSR.
Historically this holiday started as political event expressing struggle for women’s economic, political and social rights. But nowadays in many countries people celebrate March 8 as a holiday of respect, appreciation and love towards women.
History
International Women’s Day (IWD) first emerged from workers movements at the beginning of the twentieth century in North America and Europe.
The first national Women’s Day was observed on 28 February 1909 in the United States. In August 1910 on International Women’s Conference German Socialist Luise Zietz and communist Clara Zetkin proposed the establishment of an annual “International Woman’s Day”.
Delegates of the Conference (100 women from 17 countries) supported the proposal. On 18 March 1911, International Women’s Day (IWD) was celebrated for the first time. Over a million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland participated in the celebration. Women demanded equal rights and the right to vote. Americans continued to celebrate National Women’s Day on the last Sunday in February.
In 1913 women of Russia marked their first International Women’s Day on the last Sunday in February. After the October Revolution the Women’s Day was established an official holiday in the Soviet Union, but was a working day until 1965.
This holiday was also celebrated in other communist and socialist countries, for example, in China from 1922. Spanish communists celebrated this holiday from 1936.
In 1975, which was designated as International Women’s Year, the United Nations gave official sanction to, and began sponsoring, International Women’s Day.
In the West, International Women’s Day was first marked as a popular event after 1977 when the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed March 8 as the UN Day for women’s rights and world peace.
The 2005 Congress of the British Trades Union Congress approved a resolution calling for IWD to be designated a public holiday in the United Kingdom.
IWD in modern culture
International Women’s Day is an official holiday in many countries of the world. In some countries the day is not a public holiday, but is widely celebrated.
With time the meaning of the holiday evolved to an apolitical celebration of women. On this day men congratulate to the women in their lives – mothers, wives, girlfriends, daughters, colleagues, etc. – and give them flowers and small gifts.
In some countries it is also observed as an equivalent of Mother’s Day, where children also give small presents to their mothers and grandmothers. Also schoolchildren bring gifts for their teachers.
Problems of women today
But in many countries of the world women’s life is far from ideal. Just consider the following facts and figures.
Today throughout the world:
- Up to 50% of sexual assaults are committed against girls under the age of 16.
- Globally, 603 million women live in countries where domestic violence is not yet considered a crime.
- Up to 70% of women in the world report having experienced physical and/or sexual violence at some point in their lifetime.
- Over 60 million girls worldwide are child brides, married before the age of 18.
In the face of such appalling situation, the international community is strongly committed to change the position of women.
