My parents and younger brother always want me to remember this day for a long time that’s why they decorate the flat with many-coloured little balls.

On this day a lot of my friends and relations usually come to see me. When we all get together we sit down to table and begin to celebrate my birthday. Everybody has a good time dances and communicates with each other, the music plays loudly.

At the end of the holiday we turn off the lights and my father brings a big cake with candles. I must blow out the candles and make a wish. After that we have tea with a cake and then we dismiss the guests. I would like to celebrate my birthday every month because all our relations and friends can meet together on this day.

I grow up every year but my birthday always remains the most unforgettable holiday of the year.

Holidays have joyous feelings related to them. My favorite holiday is Christmas. I love this holiday because it comes in January, which is also my birth month. There are a lot of exciting things we do during Christmas. We start making preparations for Christmas early before the month starts.

This year, my friends and I made snowmen with snow outside our houses. My dad put up all the lights in the interior and exterior of the house. It was looking really bright and pretty. My mom made a lot of food, cakes, and snacks, and ate with our family. My cousins from Tatarstan came over to spend time with us.

Our whole group of family and friends ate and talked and laughed with each other, sitting cozily near the fireplace, with the Christmas tree towering over us. I had a lot of fun. It is one of my best experiences and I hope to feel it again.

When December comes I am the happiest person in the world. I wait for snow, do window shopping and prepare presents for my friends and family. Winter holidays are in the air. I think even people look happier during this period of time.

In the beginning of December we celebrate my granny’s birthday. All the family comes to wish her happiness and health. At this moment she is the happiest person in the world because all of us have dinner, talk and share memories.

In December 24 it’s (January 6) Kaliada (Christmas Eve). We cook a dinner with my mom and sister, decorate a Christmas tree and home. Sometime we invite our friends or relatives for dinner. But usually it’s a family evening. After dinner we can go to the cathedral and leave the presents under the Christmas tree.

Next morning it’s Christmas time. We wish each other merry christmas and go for a walk all together. This day all people want to spend with the family. Maybe that’s why it’s one of my favorite holidays.

The most exciting day comes at the end of the year. In December 31 we give presents to each other and celebrate New Year. It’s a fantastic time when we can say sorry to our friends and relatives, finish everything what has to be done and make new plans for the next year. Actually I start to do all these things in the beginning of winter.

In February 23 we celebrate Men’s day and wish to our dads, friends and boyfriends to be strong and to be our support.

I think there is something magical in winter holidays. I believe this is the time when our wishes can come true and we can meet new good friends.

24 декаб­ря (6 янва­ря) насту­па­ет Каля­да (Сочель­ник). Мы гото­вим празд­нич­ный стол с мамой и сест­рой, укра­ша­ем ёлку и весь дом. Ино­гда мы при­гла­ша­ем к сто­лу дру­зей или род­ствен­ни­ков. Но обыч­но это семей­ный ужин. После ужи­на мы отправ­ля­ем­ся в костёл, остав­ля­ем подар­ки под елкой друг для друга.

На сле­ду­ю­щее утро насту­па­ет Рож­де­ство. Мы поздрав­ля­ем друг дру­га с Рож­де­ством и отправ­ля­ем­ся на про­гул­ку всей семьей. Это тот день, кото­рый сто­ит про­ве­сти в кру­гу род­ных и близ­ких. Навер­ное, поэто­му это один из моих самых люби­мых праздников.

Самый дол­го­ждан­ный день насту­па­ет в послед­ний день года. 31 декаб­ря мы обме­ни­ва­ем­ся подар­ка­ми и празд­ну­ем Новый год. Это самое вер­ное вре­мя, что­бы ска­зать «про­сти» дру­зьям и род­ным, закон­чить все, что долж­но быть сде­ла­но и соста­вить пла­ны на гря­ду­щий год. Хотя, я начи­наю делать это все уже вна­ча­ле зимы.

А 23 фев­ра­ля мы празд­ну­ем муж­ской день и поздрав­ля­ем наших отцов, дру­зей и при­я­те­лей, жела­ем им оста­вать­ся силь­ны­ми и быть все­гда рядом с нами.

Есть что-то вол­шеб­ное в зим­них празд­ни­ках. Я верю, что это – то самое вре­мя, когда испол­ня­ют­ся наши жела­ния, а мы можем встре­тить новых друзей.

English Holidays

English people have many holidays. The most popular ones are Christmas, Boxing Day, Good Friday (it is celebrated on Easter week on the 21st of March or after it), Spring Bank Holiday (which is on the last Monday of June or on the first Monday of July) and Late Summer Bank Holiday. There are a lot of other celebrations too.

New Year. Some people in England don’t celebrate the New Year at all. Other Englishmen do it. The popular way to celebrate is a New Year party. It lasts from 8 o’clock in the evening till the morning. There are always a lot of tasty dishes. Londoners listen to the chimes of Big Ben at midnight.

Also people can visit a New Year’s dance. As for the capital, inhabitants prefer to celebrate the New Year outdoors at Piccadilly Circus. Homebody can spend the holiday watching TV. Traditionally people send cards, give presents and write the New Year resolutions on this day.

St. Valentine’s Day. It is celebrated on the 14th of February. Valentine is the saint patron of all people in love. They send Valentine cards to each other. Couples celebrate this day together. They prefer going to cafes, parks or arrange romantic dinners at home.

Mother’s Day. The holiday falls on the last Sunday of Lent or in March. There is a tradition to come to visit mothers, give them some presents and spend Mother’s Day in the family circle.

Easter. Another big religious English holiday is Easter. Its symbols are chocolate or painted eggs, hot cross buns and rabbits. Traditionally there is the Easter Parade in London. It is one of the most colourful events in the beginning of spring with music bands, flowers and even its own Princess.

Late Summer Bank Holiday. People like to go on picnics on the coast or in the village on this holiday. Besides, Englishmen hold big sport competitions in Summer Bank holiday. Crowds of tourists visit zoos, fairs, and riverbanks.

Bonfire Night. The holiday is celebrated on November 5 in memory of Guy Fawkes. He was a rebel who tried to blow up Parliament. During the celebration young men take part in different contests with prizes. There are a lot of lights, bonfires and fireworks at the festival.

There are lots of holidays and celebrations Russia both national and foreign. Even though many Russians celebrate world holidays, such as St.Valentine’s Day, April Fools, Halloween and others, there are a number of purely Russian national holidays, which are celebrated only in Russia. These holidays emphasize the spirit of nation and support folk traditions.

One of the most interesting holidays in Russia takes place at the end of February to celebrate the end of winter. The holiday lasts for a week which is known as a Shrovetide. In Russia this holiday is called “Maslennitsa”. People traditionally eat lots of pancakes on this holiday and burn the scarecrow saying farewell to winter snow.

Another traditionally Russian celebration takes place on January 7th, which is an Orthodox Christmas. People visit their relatives on this day carrying rice pudding with raisins, which is called “kutya”. Many young and single girls try to read their fortune on the night of 6th and 7th January.

Russian weddings are also very joyous events and they differ a lot from other countries. There is a special person on Russian weddings called “tamada” who entertains the guests by various toasts and games.

Every June many Russians celebrate the holiday called “The night of Ivan Kupala”. People traditionally weave the wreaths from wildflowers, make the bonfires and swim in lakes on the night of this day.

My favourite holiday is the New Year. I always celebrate it with my family. Before the holiday we often visit our friends and relatives and give them presents. We often go to the city centre to see the beautiful New Year tree on the main square.

We always celebrate New Year at home. A week before the holiday we begin to decorate our house with lights and garlands.

We also put up a New Year tree and decorate it with balls, cones, icicles and other toys, tinsel and lights. Under the tree we usually put statuettes of Father Frost and Snow Maiden. We put New Year presents there too.

On the 31st of December we always cook salads. My mother usually roasts meat and boils potatoes. She always bakes our favourite Napoleon cake. We watch New Year programmes and films on TV.

At about ten o’clock we all sit down at the table and have a meal. Just before midnight we light sparklers and my father opens a bottle of champagne.

We watch the president’s speech on TV, and then while the clock is striking midnight, we make wishes and drink champagne. After that we go to the balcony to watch fireworks.

When we come back into the room we open our presents. I usually get a lot of presents for the New Year. And I always try to give presents to my parents, grandparents and friends.

My favourite holiday is New Year. It is one of the oldest and deeply revered holidays. Not only children but also grown-ups love New Year. New Year is a special holiday in my family.

A few days before New Year we put up our Christmas tree in the living room. We also decorate other rooms. We put Christmas figurines on the shelves and hang garlands around the house. All these things fill our house with special festive atmosphere.

My mum cooks something special for New Year’s dinner. We all help her. We like to follow the new trend and celebrate New Year wearing same colours as the colour of the animal in Chinese calendar.

For example, when we celebrated the New Year of the Red Monkey, we wore red and orange. It is believed, that following this tradition will bring you lots of luck in the new year.

We usually watch different New Year programmes on TV on this day. When the clock on the Kremlin tower strikes midnight, we, according to the long-standing tradition, make our wishes and give each other compliments of the season. After that we exchange gifts with each other.

When I was little, I always looked forward to the coming of New Year. I am a lot older now but have the same feeling in my heart.

For me, New Year is the night when air is filled with magic, this is the time of new hopes and aspirations, a feeling of easiness and joy. This is the time when I want to live, enjoy my life to the full and move forward!

Holidays make our life brighter and more interesting. They have different meanings and their own history. During our holidays we can have some fun and just relax. Since my childhood one of my favourite holidays has been New Year’s Day.

New Year’s Day is the best time for me to spend with my family in the magical and festive atmosphere, with delicious food. Schoolchildren love this time because it’s a great start оf their winter vacation. When I was a small child I wrote letters to Father Frost and asked him for some sweets and a toy as a present. I also painted New Year greeting cards and put them under my parents’ pillows.

We usually start getting ready for the New Year’s Day in advance: we prepare presents, buy muсh food and decorate our house and the New Year tree. We also go shopping to find some nice clothes because it’s a good tradition in our family to celebrate the New Year’s Day in new clothes.

My mother always holds a real feast: she makes lots of salads, meat dumplings, cooks chicken with vegetables and bakes fruit tarts. They all taste fantastic. We watch entertaining programmes on TV and set off firecrackers in the yard. Sometimes we go to the central square to watch colourful carnivals, concerts and fireworks. Adults also have a ten-days’ holiday and it gives them a chance to visit their relatives and friends and enjoy the time together. We also have enough time to travel, indulge in sports and other hobbies.

I really enjoy New Year’s Day and every year I look forward to celebrating it with my family.

British Holidays

Every country and every nation has its own holidays. In the United Kingdom there are two types of them — bank and public holidays. Bank holidays are the days, when all people in the UK have a day off and celebrate a national event. Those days are:  New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Early May, Spring Bank holiday, Summer Bank holiday, Christmas and Boxing Day.

Public holidays are special occasions like «Guy Fawkes Night», «Mother’s Day», «Remembrance Day», «Valentine’s Day» and so on. People usually celebrate them but do not have a day off on these events, unless they fall on weekends.

Each holiday is good, but there are some of them that are really special and more popular than others.

New Year’s Day (December 31 – January 1) is a bank holiday. Like many nations around the world, British people celebrate it by hosting parties with their friends and families to await the countdown to the New Year. In Scotland they call it Hogmanay and celebrate it by having a party with friends and setting fireworks off. In many cities there are free celebrations that anyone can join.

Valentine’s Day (February 14) is celebrated in many countries around the world, although it is not a public holiday in most of them. This day has a Catholic origin and has been associated with romantic love since it was mentioned in one of Geoffrey Chaucer’s poems. Nowadays, it’s the day of anyone who is in love. On the Valentine’s Day people usually give to the person they love some sweets, a traditional heart-shaped card (“valentine”) and say, “Be my Valentine”.

Halloween (October 31) also known as All Hallow’s Eve, or All Saint’s Eve, is a yearly celebration observed in a number of countries on October 31. It is the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead. On this day children will dress up in costumes and go ‘trick or treating’ around the neighborhood. “Trick or Treating” involves knocking on someone’s door and saying ‘Trick or Treat’. That person gives them a treat (usually sweets).  Children enjoy the holiday because they go home with a bag of sweets!

Guy Fawkes Night (November 5) is a firework festival associated with the tradition of celebrating Guy Fawkes’s failed attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605. It is an annual event dedicated to bonfires, fireworks and celebrations.

Christmas (December 25) is the most important holiday for British families. This is the day that people spend with their families. There are many Christmas traditions, but the most important one is about presents. Family members prepare their gifts and put them under the Christmas tree. In the evening they sit down around the table and enjoy the meal. Then they watch the Queen’s speech on the television as she delivers her traditional Christmas message to the people of the United Kingdom. After that, family eats the Christmas cake and goes to sleep. In the morning all the family members wake up and gather around the tree to find the presents that were prepared for them.

Boxing Day (December 26) is based on the tradition of giving gifts to poor people after celebrating Christmas. The word “boxing” refers to gift boxes, and has nothing to do with the sport.

There are also a few uniquely British holidays, such as Burns Supper in Scotland, dedicated to the poet Robert Burns, or the Queen’s Birthday, but these are the most important and popular holidays in the United Kingdom.

В середине декабря мы покупаем новогоднюю елку, которую украшаем вместе с родителями. Это традиция, которая она объединяет нас, и нам действительно весело этим заниматься. Также перед Новым годом мы всегда убираемся в доме и создаем праздничную атмосферу. Я люблю украшать дом снежинками, свечами и гирляндами.

My mother and I always cook a holiday meal together. Usually, we make a lot of different traditional food. For example, Olivier salad, dressed herring, kholodets, different pies and we also bake cookies. Our table for the celebration is always covered with delicious food.

Мы с мамой всегда готовим праздничную еду вместе. Обычно мы делаем много разных традиционных блюд. Например, салат Оливье, сельдь под шубой, холодец, разные пироги и, кроме того, мы печем печенье. Наш праздничный стол всегда полон вкусной еды.

When it’s almost midnight we gather at the celebratory table to say good-bye to the outgoing year and to wish the best to each other. It is a family tradition to watch a holiday concert on TV and to listen to the president’s speech. After that, we exchange gifts and then go outside to watch fireworks, to take a walk, to meet our neighbors and congratulate everyone with the New Year. Sometimes we like to play snowballs.

Когда уже почти полночь, мы собираемся за праздничным столом, чтобы попрощаться с уходящим годом и пожелать друг другу всего наилучшего. У нас есть семейная традиция — смотреть праздничный концерт по телевизору и слушать речь президента. После этого мы обмениваемся подарками, а затем выходим на улицу, чтобы посмотреть фейерверк, погулять, встретиться с соседями и поздравить всех с Новым годом. Иногда нам нравится играть в снежки.

After that we go home, we play guitar and exchange gifts. It is a happy time because I can see the joy on the faces of my family members. I like New Year’s the most because it gives genuine emotion of happiness and family unity.

После этого мы идем домой, играем на гитаре и обмениваемся подарками. Это счастливое время, потому что я вижу радость на лицах членов моей семьи. Мне больше всего нравится Новый год, потому что он дарит подлинную эмоцию счастья и единства семьи.
