the host of the TV show «Mind Russia does not understand» Maxim
Podkolzin. Today we will talk about Russian winter holidays: St. Nicholas day,
New year, Christmas.
Слайд 4. St. Nicholas Day.
St.
Nicholas day is celebrated on December 19 — it is a pleasant memory from the
childhood of many Russians. It was on this day before it was customary to give
gifts to children. A few decades ago in this winter children’s holiday wrote
letters not to Santa Claus, namely St. Nicholas. This custom appeared
thanks to one tradition.

The
night from December 31 to January 1 is considered magical. To be more precise,
that single minute, which is the boundary of the change of times. It is while
it lasts, it is customary to make a wish. So, we can say that the winter
holiday New year is endowed not only with magic, but also with mysticism.

7 January is celebrated as the birth of Christ. Since it is
included in the category of new year holidays, the Christmas tree is not yet
removed. Lush feasts are not organized, but some religious families prepare
their traditional dishes for the celebration. Night services are held in the
churches, which gather a large number of people of all ages under the dome. The
service for the birth of Christ lasts all night. 40 days before Christmas, a
fast is established, which is particularly toughened on January 6-on the eve of
the holiday. January 7, the post ends.

Слайд 4. День Святого Николая.
День Святого Николая отмечается 19 декабря — это приятное
воспоминание из детства многих россиян. Это было в этот день, прежде чем
принято дарить подарки детям. Несколько десятилетий назад этой зимой детский
праздник писал письма не Деду Морозу, а именно святому Николаю. Этот обычай появился
благодаря одной традиции.
Слайд 5. Новый год
Ночь с 31 декабря на 1 января считается волшебной. Чтобы
быть более точным, та единственная минута, которая является границей смены
времен. Пока это длится, принято загадывать желание. Итак, можно сказать, что
зимний праздник Новый год наделен не только магией, но и мистикой.
Слайд 6. Рождество
7
января празднуется как рождение Христа. Так как он входит в категорию
новогодних праздников, елки еще не убраны. Пышные праздники не организованы, но
некоторые религиозные семьи готовят свои традиционные блюда для празднования.
Ночные службы проводятся в церквях, которые собирают большое количество людей
всех возрастов под куполом. Служба рождения Христа длится всю ночь. За 40 дней
до Рождества устанавливается пост, который особенно ужесточается 6 января —
накануне праздника. 7 января пост заканчивается.

I need to mention that I don’t attend the school for a couple of weeks. My parents don’t work either for a week or so. | Само собой разумеется, что Новый год является самым лучшим и самым долгожданным праздником в году. Моя семья тщательно готовится к этому дню. | The next holiday is the Orthodox Christmas. On the night of January 6th, we cook a special rice pudding with dried fruits in it. Then we treat our relatives and neighbors. Children sing Christmas carols on this day and get rewarded with candies and sweets. | Следующий праздник — это Рождество Христово. This way they keep fit and healthy during the year. Christmas-tide
- Christmas-tide is the period from January 7 till January 19 (the Epiphany).It was established by the Church in honour of the birth and baptism of Jesus Christ. At the period people used to walk wearing fancy costumes and singing songs, they went from house to house giving and receiving gifts and treats.
Shrovetide
- Shrovetide is the last Sunday before the Lent (Великий пост) that proceeds Easter. It is celebrated as the Farewell-to-Winter Festival. On the day people have fun. Eating pancake on the day is a pagan tradition. It is connected with glorifying the sun : pancakes are oval as the sun. Father Frost and Spring the Beauty are the main characters of the festival. In some regions people burn the figure of the Winter.

People dance, sing, toboggan, build ice sculptures. People prepare fires and burn straw scarecrows of winter. On Sunday during Shrovetide, they forgive people for their offences.
