Mark Twain is a famous American writer. His name was Samuel Clemens and Mark Twain was
his pen-name. He was born in 1835 in the town of the Hannibal on the Mississippi river in
the USA. The boy had many friends at school and when he became a writer, he described them
in his stories.
In 1876 Mark Twain published his best novel “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”. He
showed the joys and sorrows of the children with deep understanding and love. Many events
of this book really took place and characters were taken from real life.
Scene 1
Aunt Tom! Tom! Where is this naughty boy?
Tom! If I catch you, I’ll…
Aunt Tom! Oh, my God. How could I forget to close the pantry?
Aunt What did you do there?
Tom Nothing!
Aunt Nothing?! Look at your mouth. And look at your hands. What is that on them?
Tom I don’t know, Aunt.
Aunt But I know. It’s jam. I’ve told you so many times: don’t touch that jam.
Give me the broom.
(a song.
You are already a big boy.
You are already a big boy.
You must know what is right
And what’s wrong. It is bad to look untidy
It is bad to look dirty
It is bad to take things
That not to you belong.
Be polite, please.Don’t be naughty.
Don’t be rude to your teachers and friends
Be attentive to your relatives
And don’t hurt animals and girls.
Tom Oh, Aunt! What is there behind you?
Aunt What a boy. It seems I should get used to his tricks. I can’t beat him. He is
my dear sister’s boy. But I promised to punish him and I’ll have to punish him tomorrow.
Scene 2
Aunt Tom, whitewash the fence.
(a song)
I like to jump.
I like to run.
I like to play
It’s fun.
Tom Oh, auntie, I can’t. I’ll do it… tomorrow.
Aunt Whitewash the fence, I say.
Tom How terrible the life is! The boys will laugh at me when they see that. I
am working.
Tom Look, Jim! You may whitewash a little and I’ll bring water.
Jim I can’t, Mr. Tom. The old mistress told me to go to the pump. She says “I
know that Tom will ask you to whitewash the fence, but don’t listen to him and go your
own way”.
Tom Don’t listen to her! Give me the bucket. I’ll bring water.
Jim Oh, Mr. Tom. I am afraid of the old lady. She will pull off my head.
Tom Will she? But she can’t touch anybody. She can only hit your head by the
thimble. That’s all.
Tom Jim! I can give yon my white alabaster ball.
Jim Oh, yes. It’s a nice ball. But I am afraid of this old lady.
Tom And if you want, I can show my blister on the foot.
Jim Oh, my mistress. I run away.
Ben Hello, Tom! What are you doing?
Ben Tom!
Tom Oh, it’s you, Ben. I didn’t see you.
(a song)
I like to swim.
I like to play.
Come to the river
With me today
Ben I am going to the river, don’t you want to go too? But you have to work, I see.
Tom Work? What do you call work.
Ben Isn’t it work?
Tom You may call it work? All I know is, Tom Sawyer likes it.
Ben Do you want to say you like it, Tom?
Tom Why not? Does a boy whitewash a fence every day?
Ben Say, Tom, let me whitewash a little.
Tom Oh, no, Ben. Aunt Polly asked me to do it very well. The fence is on the
street.
Ben Oh, please, Tom, let me try. I’ll give you my apple.
Tom Apple?
I like, I like an apple – 3 раза
An apple and a pear
You know, my friend – 2 раза
I like, I like an apple
You know, my friend – 2 раза
An apple and a pear.
Ben I’ll give you all that I haven’t eaten yet.
Tom Well, all right. Whitewash a little.
Tom I have whitewash ed the fence.
Aunt How?! How much work have you done?
Tom Everything.
Aunt Tom! Don’t lie. I hate it.
Tom I don’t lie, Aunt.
Aunt Well, it’s all done! You are a good boy, Tom. You can work when you want to.
But you want very seldom. Now, you may go and play.
(a song)
My dear, dear Tommy.
I love you very much.
I want you to be happy
All your long and happy life.
Be happy, be happy
All your long and happy life.
Scene 3
(a song)
Lazy Tommy, will you get up?
Will you get up? Will you get up?
Lazy Tommy, will you get up?
Will you get up today?
Tom I don’t want to go to school. What can I do to stay at home?
Oh, what a wonderful idea came to me!
Tom Sid! Sid!
(a song)
Why do you moan, Tom?
Why do you moan?
Why, Tom? Why. Tom?
Why, Tom? Why?
Sid Tom! Tom! Do you hear me, Tom? What’s the matter with you?
Tom Leave me alone! Don’t shake me!
Sid What’s the matter with you, Tom?
I’ll call Aunt
Tom Don’t call. Don’t call anybody, please.
Oh, Sid! I am dying. I am not angry with you.
I am not angry with Aunt Polly. Tell her so.
Sid Tom, don’t die, please!
Sid Oh, Aunt Polly, come here quickly. Tom is dying.
Aunt Dying?!
Sid Yes! Yes! Come here quickly.
Aunt Nonsense! I don’t believe.
Tom! Tom! What has happened to you, my boy!
Tom Oh, auntie, look at my right hand! It is red. This is gangrene on my finger.
Aunt You frightened me, Tom! That’s enough. Don’t show your tricks any more.
Tom Aunt Polly, my finger hurts me so much that I forgot about my tooth.
Aunt Your tooth? And what has happened to your tooth?
Tom It’s loose.
Aunt Open your mouth. Well, you are right. Your tooth is loose. Sid, bring me some
thread.
Tom Oh, please, dear auntie, don’t pull it out. It is all right now I’ll go to
school.
Aunt Go to school? Oh, I see you’ve done it because you don’t want to go to
school… Tom, I love you so dearly but you…
And now get up and GO TO SCHOOL!

Aunt Polly: Tom! (нет ответа) Tom! (нет ответа) What’s gone with that boy, I wonder? You, Tom!
Aunt Polly: Well, if I get hold of you, I’ll …
Aunt Polly: I never did see the beast of that boy!
Aunt Polly: Y — o — u — u Tom!
Aunt Polly: There! I might have thought of that closet. What were you doing in there?
Tom: Nothing.
Aunt Polly: Nothing! Look at your hands. And look at your mouth. What IS that?
Tom: I don’t know, aunt.
Aunt Polly: Well, I know. It’s jam — that’s what it is. Forty times I’ve said if you didn’t let that jam alone I’d skin you. Give me that switch.
Tom: My! Look behind you, aunt!
Aunt Polly: What a boy! He has played so many tricks on me! I must make him work tomorrow, to punish him. It’s hard to make him work Saturdays, when all the boys are having a holiday, but he deserves that!
Dance.
Tom: Jim, I’ll bring the water if you whitewash some fence.
Jim: I can’t, Master Tom. Old Missis, she told me I got to go and get the water and not stop fooling around with anybody.
Tom: Oh, that’s the way she always talks. Give me the bucket. SHE won’t ever know.
Jim: Oh, I can’t, Master Tom. Old Missis, she would take my head off me.
Tom: SHE! She talks awful, but doesn’t hurt. Jim, I’ll give you a stone. I’ll give you a white stone.
Tom: White stone, Jim!
Jim: My! That’s a beautiful stone, I tell you! But Master Tom, I’m afraid of Old Missis…
Tom: And besides, if you agree, I’ll show you my sore toe.
Aunt Polly: You, bad boys! You think you can pull me round your finger! Jim, rush to the well
Ben: Hi — hi! Here you are!
Ben: Hello, old chap, you got to work, hey?
Tom: Why, it’s you, Ben! I didn’t notice.
Ben: Say — I’m going swimming, I am. Don’t you wish you could? But of course you’d rather WORK, wouldn’t you? Of course you would!
Tom: What do you call work?
Ben: Why, isn’t THAT work?
Tom: Well, maybe it is, and maybe it isn’t. All I know, is it suits Tom Sawyer.
Ben: Oh come on, you don’t want to say you LIKE it?
Tom: Like it? Well, I don’t see why I mustn’t like it. Does a boy get a chance to whitewash a fence every day?
Ben: Say, Tom, let ME whitewash a little.
Tom: No — no — I think you can’t do it, Ben. You see, Aunt Polly’s very serious about this fence — right here in the street, you know.
Ben: No — is that so? Oh come on, now – let me just try.
Tom: Ben, I’d like to, really; but Aunt Polly… What if you whitewash and anything happens?
Ben: Oh, I’ll be very careful. Now let me try. Say — I’ll give you the core of my apple.
Tom: Well… No, Ben, I’m afraid…
Ben: I’ll give you ALL of it!
Billy: What are you doing on such a nice sunny day? Are you working?
Ben: Working? Ha — ha — ha! Does a boy have a chance to whitewash the fence every day?
Billy: Hmmm… Can I try?
Tom: I’m sorry, Billy. My Aunt Polly is very serious about her fence… I can’t let everyone whitewash it!
Billy: But what if I give you my kite?
Tom: Hmmm. Ok. Then you are after Ben. Ben, give him the brush.
Joseph: Mmm, Tom! Hello! Can I whitewash your fence?
Tom: Well, I don’t know…
Joseph: What if I give you a dead rat and this orange peel?
Tom: A dead rat? Not bad. Ben, it’s Joseph’s turn now.
Sid: Tom, I hear you let the boys whitewash the fence. May I try to? I will give a white marble.
Tom: A white marble? No, Sid, that isn’t enough.
Sid: And if I add a piece of blue bottle — glass?
Tom: That will do. You can take the brush.
Girl: Mmm, Tom! Hello! Can I whitewash your fence?
Tom: I’m sorry, girls are not allowed!
Girl: How many wonderful things you have, Tom! A dead rat, a piece of blue bottle — glass, a kite, a white marble, an apple, four pieces of orange — peel… Wow!
Tom: I’m sorry, Girl. I can’t talk to you any more. I must go to my Aunt Polly and show her the fence.

Aunt Polly: Tom! (нет ответа) Tom! (нет ответа) What’s gone with that boy, I wonder? You, Tom!
Aunt Polly: I never did see the beast of that boy!
Aunt Polly: Y-o-u-u Tom!
Aunt Polly: What were you doing in there?
Tom: Nothing.
Aunt Polly: Nothing! Look at your hands. And look at your mouth. What IS that?
Tom: I don’t know, aunt.
Aunt Polly: Well, I know. It’s jam — that’s what it is. Forty times I’ve said if you didn’t let that jam alone I’d skin you. Give me that switch.
Tom: My! Look behind you, aunt!
Aunt Polly: What a boy! Tom! Come back!
Ben: Hi-YI! Here you are!
Ben: Hello, old chap, you got to work, hey?
Tom: Why, it’s you, Ben! What do you call work?
Ben: Why, isn’t THAT work?
Tom: Well, maybe it is, and maybe it isn’t. All I know, is, it suits Tom Sawyer.
You see, Aunt Polly’s very serious about this fence. I think there isn’t one boy in a thousand, maybe two thousand, that can do it the way it’s got to be done.
Ben: No — is that so? Oh come on, now – let me just try. Only just a little — I’d let YOU, if you were me, Tom.
Tom: Ben, I’d like to, really; but Aunt Polly — well, Jim wanted to do it, but she wouldn’t let him; Sid wanted to do it, and she wouldn’t let Sid. Now don’t you see how I’m fixed? What if you whitewash and anything happens?
Ben: Oh, I’ll be very careful. Now let me try. Say — I’ll give you the core of my apple.
Tom: Well… No, Ben, now don’t. I’m afraid…
Ben: I’ll give you ALL of it!
Billy: What are you doing on such a nice sunny day? Are you working?
Ben: Working? Ha-ha-ha! Does a boy have a chance to whitewash the fence every day?
Billy: Hmmm… Can I try?
Tom: I’m sorry, Billy. My Aunt Polly is very serious about her fence… I can’t let everyone whitewash it!
Billy: But what if I give you my kite?
Tom: Hmmm. Ok. Then you’ll be after Ben.
Girl: Mmm, Tom! Hello! Can I whitewash you fence?
Tom: I’m sorry, girls are not allowed! I must go to my Aunt Polly and show her the fence.
Tom: May I go and play now, aunt?
Aunt Polly: What? Are you ready? How much have you done?
Tom: It’s all done, aunt.
Aunt Polly: Tom, don’t lie to me!
Tom: I don’t, aunt; it IS all done.
Aunt Polly: Good job! Well, go and play; but come back on time or I’ll tan you.
Dear friends!
I hope you realize how great it is to have an English week at our Cadet School.
During this week you’ll have some out-of-class activities in English which help you to get to know English better and improve your knowledge at this subject.
Today you’ll have a chance to watch some scenes from the famous M. Twains book “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and just enjoy yourselves!
My name is Mark Twain and I once wrote a story “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”.
Some of you may have read this book, others – may not. The book was read by everybody – by the young and old and was translated nearly every language in the world.
“The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” was such a success that in 1884 I wrote “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” and then “Tom Sawyer Abroad” in 1894 and “Tom Sawyer, Detective” in 1896.
Mark Twain’s stories enjoy widespread popularity.
His characters are always well-drawn, his stories are true-to life, and the plots of his stories are skillfully built up.
Many years have passed since Mark Twain’s death, but even now we enjoy his work.
I’d like to tell you about M. Twain’s masterpieces.
I think all children like to read “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”. You can read them in Russian, Ukrainian, English and other languages.
Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn are loyal friends. Tom is romantic and Huck is a realist. Both of them are adventure seekers. And now meet the main characters of the book.
TOM SAWYER:
Hello! Let me introduce myself. My name is Tom Sawyer. I am an ordinary boy. Though of quicker wits.
Scene 1:
(Aunt Polly and Tom)
Aunt Polly: Tom! Tom! When I find you… You, Tom! What were you doing in that corner?
Tom: Nothing! What is that on your hands and your face?
Aunt Polly: I know! You have been eating jam! I have told you a hundred of times not to eat jam! That boy! I never know what he will do next. And he knows that I do not want to hit him. But I should. I must try to make him a good boy. He is my dead sister’s son and it is my duty. I must do my duty.
Presenter:
As you can see Tom Sawyer is a brilliant boy with lots of ideas in his head. He is never bored, he is a creative person and he is able to make people treat him the way he wants.
The next morning…
Presenter:
The next morning Tom was very sad. This was the beginning of another week of slow suffering at school. He lay in bed, thinking.
Tom thought carefully about all parts of the body, but he could discover no sickness.
He had an idea! He began to cry as if with pain!
Scene 2
(Tom, Sid and Aunt Polly)
Tom: If I were sick, I could stay home. Sid! Sid! (Продолжает спать) Sid!
Sid: Oh, Tom, what’s wrong?
Tom: Oh, do not do it, Sid. It hurts me!
Sid: I must call Aunt Polly!
Tom: No, do not call her! I will forget everything you have done to me, Sid! When I die..
Sid: Oh, Tom, are you dying?
Tom: Give my cat with one eye to that new girl, and tell her…
Sid: Dying! I can’t believe it!
Aunt Polly: Tom! My angel! What is wrong?
Tom: Oh, I’m dying! Please, forgive me everything my dear Aunty! I’m dying… It’s my foot and I hurt it! The doctor must cut it off…
Aunt Polly: That boy! I never know what he will do next. Every day he has another adventure…Tom! My dear boy! Please, get out of bed and go quickly to school… Quickly! Quickly!
Presenter:
It was a summer evening. Tom walked along the street whistling like a bird. Then he stopped whistling. He had met a stranger, a boy he had never seen before.
The boy’s clothes were new and good and he was wearing shoes. Tom would wear shoes and good clothes only to church on Sunday. Tom looked and looked. The boy’s clothes seemed to become better and better and his own clothes seemed to grow poor. Neither boy spoke. If one moved, then the other moved. But they moved only to the side, in a circle. They remained face-to-face and eye-to-eye.
Scene 3
(Tom Sawyer and a stranger)
Tom: I can beat you!
Stranger: Try!
Tom: I can!Stranger: No, you can’t!
Tom: I can!Stranger: You can’t!
Tom: Can!
Stranger: Can’t!
Tom: I could beat you with one hand!
Stranger: Do it! You say you can do it.
Tom: That hat!
Stranger: Hit it off my head if you can.
Tom: I will.
Stranger: You are afraid.
Tom: I am not afraid.
Stranger: You are.
Tom: I am not.
Stranger: You are.
Tom: Have you had enough?
Stranger: Have you had enough? Enough!!!
Presenter:
Tom Sawyer is a remarkable person. He is always busy thinking over his adventures.
He doesn’t want to obey any rules, he doesn’t like to study, he doesn’t like to work, but he is a real gentleman in his relationship with his girls.
Scene 4
(Tom and Becky)
Tom: Becky, have you ever been engaged?
Becky: What does that mean?
Tom: Did you ever promise to marry?
Becky: No.
Tom: Would you like to be engaged?
Becky: What do you do?
Tom: You tell a boy that you will marry him. Then you kiss. That is. It is easy.
Becky: Why do you kiss?
Tom: They always do that. Do you remember I told you that I’m in love with you? Shall I tell you once again?
Becky: Yes! (No…)
Tom: We must kiss.
Becky: Yes, but not now. Tomorrow.
Tom: No, now! I will say it quietly, close your ear. ( Говорит в ухо) I love you, Betsy. Now you tell me!
Becky: (Стесняясь) I…love you.
Tom: Now it’s all finished, Becky. After this you can’t love any boy except me or marry any boy except me.
Becky: And you can’t marry any girl but me!
Tom: Certainly! That is part of it. And we will walk to school together. Because we are engaged.
Becky: It is nice. I never heard of it before.
Tom: Oh it is fine. Me and Amy Lawrence…
Becky: Oh, Tom! I’m not the first that you were engaged to!
Tom: I do not love her now. I do not love any girl except you. Becky, take this!
Presenter:
I hope you enjoyed Tom Sawyer’s adventures and had a good time with us.
I also hope that those who have read Mark Twain’s book re-read it, and those who haven’t read it yet find some time and read it with great pleasure.
Thank you for being friendly and attentive.
