  Сцена 1

Aunt Polly: Tom! (нет ответа) Tom! (нет ответа) What’s gone with that boy, I wonder? You, Tom!

Aunt Polly: Well, if I get hold of you, I’ll …

Aunt Polly: I never did see the beast of that boy!

Aunt Polly: Y — o — u — u Tom!

Aunt Polly: There! I might have thought of that closet. What were you doing in there?

Tom: Nothing.

Aunt Polly: Nothing! Look at your hands. And look at your mouth. What IS that?

Tom: I don’t know, aunt.

Aunt Polly: Well, I know. It’s jam — that’s what it is. Forty times I’ve said if you didn’t let that jam alone I’d skin you. Give me that switch.

(skin – снимать шкуру, switch – прут, розга)

Tom: My! Look behind you, aunt!

Aunt Polly: What a boy! He has played so many tricks on me! I must make him work tomorrow, to punish him. It’s hard to make him work Saturdays, when all the boys are having a holiday, but he deserves that!

Dance.

   Сцена 2

Tom: Jim, I’ll bring the water if you whitewash some fence.

Jim: I can’t, Master Tom. Old Missis, she told me I got to go and get the water and not stop fooling around with anybody.

Tom: Oh, that’s the way she always talks. Give me the bucket. SHE won’t ever know.

Jim: Oh, I can’t, Master Tom. Old Missis, she would take my head off me.

Tom: SHE! She talks awful, but doesn’t hurt. Jim, I’ll give you a stone. I’ll give you a white stone.

Tom: White stone, Jim!

Jim: My! That’s a beautiful stone, I tell you! But Master Tom, I’m afraid of Old Missis…

Tom: And besides, if you agree, I’ll show you my sore toe.

Aunt Polly: You, bad boys! You think you can pull me round your finger! Jim, rush to the well

Ben: Hi — hi! Here you are!

Ben: Hello, old chap, you got to work, hey?

Tom: Why, it’s you, Ben! I didn’t notice.

Ben: Say — I’m going swimming, I am. Don’t you wish you could? But of course you’d rather WORK, wouldn’t you? Of course you would!

Tom: What do you call work?

Ben: Why, isn’t THAT work?

Tom: Well, maybe it is, and maybe it isn’t. All I know, is it suits Tom Sawyer.

Ben: Oh come on, you don’t want to say you LIKE it?

Tom: Like it? Well, I don’t see why I mustn’t like it. Does a boy get a chance to whitewash a fence every day?

Ben: Say, Tom, let ME whitewash a little.

Tom: No — no — I think you can’t do it, Ben. You see, Aunt Polly’s very serious about this fence — right here in the street, you know.

Ben: No — is that so? Oh come on, now – let me just try.

Tom: Ben, I’d like to, really; but Aunt Polly… What if you whitewash and anything happens?

Ben: Oh, I’ll be very careful. Now let me try. Say — I’ll give you the core of my apple.

Tom: Well… No, Ben, I’m afraid…

Ben: I’ll give you ALL of it!

Billy: What are you doing on such a nice sunny day? Are you working?

Ben: Working? Ha — ha — ha! Does a boy have a chance to whitewash the fence every day?

Billy: Hmmm… Can I try?

Tom: I’m sorry, Billy. My Aunt Polly is very serious about her fence… I can’t let everyone whitewash it!

Billy: But what if I give you my kite?

Tom: Hmmm. Ok. Then you are after Ben. Ben, give him the brush.

Joseph: Mmm, Tom! Hello! Can I whitewash your fence?

Tom: Well, I don’t know…

Joseph: What if I give you a dead rat and this orange peel?

Tom: A dead rat? Not bad. Ben, it’s Joseph’s turn now.

Sid: Tom, I hear you let the boys whitewash the fence. May I try to? I will give a white marble.

Tom: A white marble? No, Sid, that isn’t enough.

Sid: And if I add a piece of blue bottle — glass?

Tom: That will do. You can take the brush.

Girl: Mmm, Tom! Hello! Can I whitewash your fence?

Tom: I’m sorry, girls are not allowed!

Girl: How many wonderful things you have, Tom! A dead rat, a piece of blue bottle — glass, a kite, a white marble, an apple, four pieces of orange — peel… Wow!

Tom: I’m sorry, Girl. I can’t talk to you any more. I must go to my Aunt Polly and show her the fence.

P, P, P, P. P…………  . SONG

Little Sawyer had a pocket, E — I — E — I — O

And in that pocket was a kite, E — I — E — I — O

With a rat and kite, orange peels and glass,

White marbles, apples and different treasures

Little Sawyer had that wealth, E — I — E — I — O

showed the joys and sorrows of the children with deep understanding and love. Many events
of this book really took place and characters were taken from real life.

Марк Твен “Приключения Тома Сойера”

Scene 1

(Тетя Полли подметает пол в комнате)

Aunt Tom! Tom! Where is this naughty boy?

Tom! If I catch you, I’ll…

(Идет к чулану)

Aunt Tom! Oh, my God. How could I forget to close the pantry?

(Появляется Том, лицо и руки перепачканы
вареньем)

Aunt What did you do there?

Tom Nothing!

Aunt Nothing?! Look at your mouth. And look at your hands. What is that on them?

Tom I don’t know, Aunt.

Aunt But I know. It’s jam. I’ve told you so many times: don’t touch that jam.

Give me the broom.

(a song. Пусть бегут неуклюже…)

You are already a big boy.
You are already a big boy.
You must know what is right
And what’s wrong.

It is bad to look untidy
It is bad to look dirty
It is bad to take things
That not to you belong.
Be polite, please.

Don’t be naughty.
Don’t be rude to your teachers and friends
Be attentive to your relatives
And don’t hurt animals and girls.

Tom Oh, Aunt! What is there behind you?

(Тетя оглядывается, Том убегает)

Aunt What a boy. It seems I should get used to his tricks. I can’t beat him. He is
my dear sister’s boy. But I promised to punish him and I’ll have to punish him tomorrow.

Scene 2

(Двор. Забор. Скамейка)

Aunt Tom, whitewash the fence.

(a song)

I like to jump.
I like to run.
I like to play
It’s fun.

Tom Oh, auntie, I can’t. I’ll do it… tomorrow.

Aunt Whitewash the fence, I say.

(Ставит ведро и уходит)

Tom How terrible the life is! The boys will laugh at me when they see that. I
am working.

(Том белит забор с неохотой, появляется Джим)

Tom Look, Jim! You may whitewash a little and I’ll bring water.

Jim I can’t, Mr. Tom. The old mistress told me to go to the pump. She says “I
know that Tom will ask you to whitewash the fence, but don’t listen to him and go your
own way”.

Tom Don’t listen to her! Give me the bucket. I’ll bring water.

Jim Oh, Mr. Tom. I am afraid of the old lady. She will pull off my head.

Tom Will she? But she can’t touch anybody. She can only hit your head by the
thimble. That’s all.

Tom Jim! I can give yon my white alabaster ball.

Jim Oh, yes. It’s a nice ball. But I am afraid of this old lady.

Tom And if you want, I can show my blister on the foot.

Jim Oh, my mistress. I run away.

(Джим убегает)

(Появляется Бен, ест яблоко)

Ben Hello, Tom! What are you doing?

(Том не отвечает)

Ben Tom!

Tom Oh, it’s you, Ben. I didn’t see you.

(a song)

I like to swim.
I like to play.
Come to the river
With me today

Ben I am going to the river, don’t you want to go too? But you have to work, I see.

Tom Work? What do you call work.

Ben Isn’t it work?

Tom You may call it work? All I know is, Tom Sawyer likes it.

Ben Do you want to say you like it, Tom?

Tom Why not? Does a boy whitewash a fence every day?

Ben Say, Tom, let me whitewash a little.

Tom Oh, no, Ben. Aunt Polly asked me to do it very well. The fence is on the
street.

Ben Oh, please, Tom, let me try. I’ll give you my apple.

Tom Apple?

(a song) Мелодия “В траве сидел кузнечик”

I like, I like an apple – 3 раза
An apple and a pear
You know, my friend – 2 раза
I like, I like an apple
You know, my friend – 2 раза
An apple and a pear.

Ben I’ll give you all that I haven’t eaten yet.

Tom Well, all right. Whitewash a little.

(Тетя в комнате вяжет)

Tom I have whitewash ed the fence.

Aunt How?! How much work have you done?

Tom Everything.

Aunt Tom! Don’t lie. I hate it.

Tom I don’t lie, Aunt.

(Идут смотреть забор)

Aunt Well, it’s all done! You are a good boy, Tom. You can work when you want to.
But you want very seldom. Now, you may go and play.

(a song)

My dear, dear Tommy.
I love you very much.
I want you to be happy
All your long and happy life.
Be happy, be happy
All your long and happy life.

Scene 3

(Комната. На кровати Том)

(a song)

Lazy Tommy, will you get up?
Will you get up? Will you get up?
Lazy Tommy, will you get up?

Tom I don’t want to go to school. What can I do to stay at home?

Oh, what a wonderful idea came to me!

(Том ложится снова и начинает стонать)

Tom Sid! Sid!

(a song)

Why do you moan, Tom?
Why do you moan?
Why, Tom? Why. Tom?
Why, Tom? Why?

Sid Tom! Tom! Do you hear me, Tom? What’s the matter with you?

Tom Leave me alone! Don’t shake me!

Sid What’s the matter with you, Tom?

I’ll call Aunt

Tom Don’t call. Don’t call anybody, please.

Oh, Sid! I am dying. I am not angry with you.

I am not angry with Aunt Polly. Tell her so.

Sid Tom, don’t die, please!

(Бежит за тетей)

Sid Oh, Aunt Polly, come here quickly. Tom is dying.

Aunt Dying?!

Sid Yes! Yes! Come here quickly.

Aunt Nonsense! I don’t believe.

Tom! Tom! What has happened to you, my boy!

Tom Oh, auntie, look at my right hand! It is red. This is gangrene on my finger.

Aunt You frightened me, Tom! That’s enough. Don’t show your tricks any more.

Tom Aunt Polly, my finger hurts me so much that I forgot about my tooth.

Aunt Your tooth? And what has happened to your tooth?

Tom It’s loose.

Aunt Open your mouth. Well, you are right. Your tooth is loose. Sid, bring me some
thread.

Tom Oh, please, dear auntie, don’t pull it out. It is all right now I’ll go to
school.

Aunt Go to school? Oh, I see you’ve done it because you don’t want to go to
school… Tom, I love you so dearly but you…

And now get up and GO TO SCHOOL!

Песня (1 куплет и припев)

Сцена 1

Поют птички. Звук улицы…

Aunt Polly: Tom! (нет ответа) Tom! (нет ответа) What’s gone with that boy, I wonder? You, Tom!

Ответа нет.

Тетя Полли спустила очки на нос и оглядела комнату поверх очков, затем подняла их на лоб и оглядела комнату изпод очков.

Aunt Polly: I never did see the beast of that boy!

Подойдя к открытой настежь двери, она остановилась на пороге и обвела взглядом свой огород — грядки помидоров, заросшие дурманом. Тома не было и здесь. Тогда, возвысив голос, чтобы ее было слышно как можно дальше, она крикнула:

Aunt Polly: Y-o-u-u Tom!

За ее спиной послышался легкий шорох, и она оглянулась — как раз вовремя, чтобы ухватить за плечи мальчишку, прежде чем он прошмыгнул в дверь.

Aunt Polly:  What were you doing in there?
Tom: Nothing.
Aunt Polly: Nothing! Look at your hands. And look at your mouth. What IS that?
Tom: I don’t know, aunt.
Aunt Polly: Well, I know. It’s jam — that’s what it is. Forty times I’ve said if you didn’t let that jam alone I’d skin you. Give me that switch. (skin – снимать шкуру, switch – прут, розга)
Розга засвистела в воздухе, — казалось, беды не миновать.
Tom: My! Look behind you, aunt!

Старушка обернулась, подхватив юбки, чтобы уберечь себя от опасности.

Мальчик в один миг перемахнул через высокий забор и был таков.

Aunt Polly: What a boy! Tom! Come back!

Ben: Hi-YI! Here you are!
Ben: Hello, old chap, you got to work, hey?
Том круто обернулся и сказал:

Tom: Why, it’s you, Ben! What do you call work?
Ben: Why, isn’t THAT work?
Том снова принялся белить и ответил небрежно:
Tom: Well, maybe it is, and maybe it isn’t. All I know, is, it suits Tom Sawyer.
Ben: Oh come on, you don’t want to say you LIKE it?
Кисть все также равномерно двигалась по забору.
Tom: Like it? Well, I don’t see why I mustn’t like it. Does a boy get a chance to whitewash a fence every day?
Ben: Say, Tom, let ME whitewash a little.
Том задумался и сначала как будто готов был согласиться, а потом вдруг передумал.
Tom: No — no — I think you can’t do it, Ben. You see, Aunt Polly’s very serious about this fence. I think there isn’t one boy in a thousand, maybe two thousand, that can do it the way it’s got to be done.
Ben: No — is that so? Oh come on, now – let me just try. Only just a little — I’d let YOU, if you were me, Tom.
Tom: Ben, I’d like to, really; but Aunt Polly — well, Jim wanted to do it, but she wouldn’t let him; Sid wanted to do it, and she wouldn’t let Sid. Now don’t you see how I’m fixed? What if you whitewash and anything happens?
Ben: Oh, I’ll be very careful. Now let me try. Say — I’ll give you the core of my apple.
Tom: Well… No, Ben, now don’t. I’m afraid…
Ben: I’ll give you ALL of it!
Том выпустил кисть из рук с виду не очень охотно, зато с ликованием в душе. И Бен трудился в поте лица на солнцепеке

(музыка. Появляется Billy с воздушным змеем)

Billy: What are you doing on such a nice sunny day? Are you working?

Ben: Working? Ha-ha-ha! Does a boy have a chance to whitewash the fence every day?

Billy: Hmmm… Can I try?

Tom: I’m sorry, Billy. My Aunt Polly is very serious about her fence… I can’t let everyone whitewash it!

Billy: But what if I give you my kite?

Tom: Hmmm. Ok. Then you’ll be after Ben.

(ИСПОЛЕНИЕ ПЕСНИ)

Billy красит забор, Том играет с воздушным змеем. Появляются еще несколько детей, которые дают Тому всякие подарки и красят вместо него забор)Появляется девочка)

Girl: Mmm, Tom! Hello! Can I whitewash you fence?

Tom: I’m sorry, girls are not allowed! I must go to my Aunt Polly and show her the fence.

(музыка)

Сцена 3

Все уходят. Появляется тетя Полли.

Tom: May I go and play now, aunt?
Aunt Polly: What? Are you ready? How much have you done?
Tom: It’s all done, aunt.
Aunt Polly: Tom, don’t lie to me!
Tom: I don’t, aunt; it IS all done.

Когда же она увидела, что выбелен весь забор и не только выбелен, но и покрыт известкой в два и даже три слоя и вдобавок на земле проведена белая полоса, то ее удивление перешло всякие границы. Она сказала:

Aunt Polly: Good job! Well, go and play; but come back on time or I’ll tan you.

(музыка. Все выходят на поклон)

Сценарий по мотивам произведения М.Твена «Приключения Тома Сойера».

Dear friends!

I hope you realize how great it is to have an English week at our Cadet School.

During this week you’ll have some out-of-class activities in English which help you to get to know English better and improve your knowledge at this subject.

Today you’ll have a chance to watch some scenes from the famous M. Twains book “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and just enjoy yourselves!

My name is Mark Twain and I once wrote a story “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”.

Some of you may have read this book, others – may not. The book was read by everybody – by the young and old and was translated nearly every language in the world.

“The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” was such a success that in 1884 I wrote “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” and then “Tom Sawyer Abroad” in 1894 and “Tom Sawyer, Detective” in 1896.

Mark Twain’s stories enjoy widespread popularity.

His characters are always well-drawn, his stories are true-to life, and the plots of his stories are skillfully built up.

Many years have passed since Mark Twain’s death, but even now we enjoy his work.

I’d like to tell you about M. Twain’s masterpieces.

I think all children like to read “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”. You can read them in Russian, Ukrainian, English and other languages.

Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn are loyal friends. Tom is romantic and Huck is a realist. Both of them are adventure seekers. And now meet the main characters of the book.

TOM SAWYER:

Hello! Let me introduce myself. My name is Tom Sawyer. I am an ordinary boy. Though of quicker wits.

Scene 1:

(Aunt Polly and Tom)

Aunt Polly: Tom! Tom! When I find you… You, Tom! What were you doing in that corner?

Tom: Nothing! What is that on your hands and your face?

Aunt Polly: I know! You have been eating jam! I have told you a hundred of times not to eat jam! That boy! I never know what he will do next. And he knows that I do not want to hit him. But I should. I must try to make him a good boy. He is my dead sister’s son and it is my duty. I must do my duty.

Presenter:

As you can see Tom Sawyer is a brilliant boy with lots of ideas in his head. He is never bored, he is a creative person and he is able to make people treat him the way he wants.

The next morning…

Presenter:

The next morning Tom was very sad. This was the beginning of another week of slow suffering at school. He lay in bed, thinking.

Tom thought carefully about all parts of the body, but he could discover no sickness.

He had an idea! He began to cry as if with pain!

Scene 2

(Tom, Sid and Aunt Polly)

Tom: If I were sick, I could stay home. Sid! Sid! (Продолжает спать) Sid!

Sid: Oh, Tom, what’s wrong?

Tom: Oh, do not do it, Sid. It hurts me!

Sid: I must call Aunt Polly!

Tom: No, do not call her! I will forget everything you have done to me, Sid! When I die..

Sid: Oh, Tom, are you dying?

Tom: Give my cat with one eye to that new girl, and tell her…

Sid: Dying! I can’t believe it!

(Прибегает Т.Полли)

Aunt Polly: Tom! My angel! What is wrong?

Tom: Oh, I’m dying! Please, forgive me everything my dear Aunty! I’m dying… It’s my foot and I hurt it! The doctor must cut it off…

(Т. Полли садится в кресло)

Aunt Polly: That boy! I never know what he will do next. Every day he has another adventure…Tom! My dear boy! Please, get out of bed and go quickly to school… Quickly! Quickly!

Presenter:

It was a summer evening. Tom walked along the street whistling like a bird. Then he stopped whistling. He had met a stranger, a boy he had never seen before.

The boy’s clothes were new and good and he was wearing shoes. Tom would wear shoes and good clothes only to church on Sunday. Tom looked and looked. The boy’s clothes seemed to become better and better and his own clothes seemed to grow poor. Neither boy spoke. If one moved, then the other moved. But they moved only to the side, in a circle. They remained face-to-face and eye-to-eye.

Scene 3

(Tom Sawyer and a stranger)

Tom: I can beat you!

Stranger: Try!

Tom: I can!Stranger: No, you can’t!

Tom: I can!Stranger: You can’t!

Tom: Can!

Stranger: Can’t!

Tom: I could beat you with one hand!

Stranger: Do it! You say you can do it.

Tom: That hat!

Stranger: Hit it off my head if you can.

Tom: I will.

Stranger: You are afraid.

Tom: I am not afraid.

Stranger: You are.

Tom: I am not.

Stranger: You are.

(Драка)

Tom: Have you had enough?

Stranger: Have you had enough? Enough!!!

Presenter:

Tom Sawyer is a remarkable person. He is always busy thinking over his adventures.

He doesn’t want to obey any rules, he doesn’t like to study, he doesn’t like to work, but he is a real gentleman in his relationship with his girls.

Scene 4

(Tom and Becky)

Tom: Becky, have you ever been engaged?

Becky: What does that mean?

Tom: Did you ever promise to marry?

Becky: No.

Tom: Would you like to be engaged?

Becky: What do you do?

Tom: You tell a boy that you will marry him. Then you kiss. That is. It is easy.

Becky: Why do you kiss?

Tom: They always do that. Do you remember I told you that I’m in love with you? Shall I tell you once again?

Becky: Yes! (No…)

Tom: We must kiss.

Becky: Yes, but not now. Tomorrow.

Tom: No, now! I will say it quietly, close your ear. ( Говорит в ухо) I love you, Betsy. Now you tell me!

Becky: (Стесняясь) I…love you. (Том целует Бэки).

Tom: Now it’s all finished, Becky. After this you can’t love any boy except me or marry any boy except me.

Becky: And you can’t marry any girl but me!

Tom: Certainly! That is part of it. And we will walk to school together. Because we are engaged.

Becky: It is nice. I never heard of it before.

Tom: Oh it is fine. Me and Amy Lawrence…

Becky: Oh, Tom! I’m not the first that you were engaged to! (Начинает плакать).

Tom: I do not love her now. I do not love any girl except you. (Бэки рыдает. Том достает что-то из кармана). Becky, take this!

Presenter:

I hope you enjoyed Tom Sawyer’s adventures and had a good time with us.

I also hope that those who have read Mark Twain’s book re-read it, and those who haven’t read it yet find some time and read it with great pleasure.

Thank you for being friendly and attentive.

Сценарий внеклассного мероприятия по английскому языку в 7 классе «Том Сойер и его приключения»

All the participants are on the stage.

Storyteller 1: Good afternoon, dear friends, teachers, boys and girls! We welcome you at our English party.

Storyteller 2: «Tom Sawyer» by Mark Twain. All of us know this name very well. We read the novel, saw films and performances about Tom Sawyer and his adventures. And we like the boy very much. Today we`ll show you our version of some scenes from the book about Tom Sawyer.

Storyteller 1: Tom and his friends live in America, state Missouri, in a little town on the west bank of the river Mississippi. He lives in the family of his Aunt Polly. He does not like to go to school and he often misses classes.

Scene 1

In the living room

Tom Sawyer and Aunt Polly are in the room. There is a table and some chairs in the room. There is a stick in the corner. Aunt Polly is sitting at the table. Tom is under the table. She can`t see him.

Aunt Polly: Tom! (Silence) Where is he? Tom! (Aunt Polly is looking for Tom everywhere: she is taking off her glasses, she is looking under the chairs, she is putting on her glasses. She is angry.) You — u — u — Tom!

Tom: Here I am. (There is some noise under the table.)

Aunt Polly: What were you doing there?

Tom: Nothing.

Aunt Polly: Nothing? Look at your hands (Tom is looking at his hands.) and look at your mouth! (Tom is wiping his mouth.) What is that?

Tom: I don`t know, Aunt.

Aunt Polly: Well, I know. It`s jam. That`s what it is. I`ve told you forty times, if you steal this jam, I`ll punish you. Hand me this stick. (Tom gives his aunt the stick. Aunt Polly is angry. She is ready to strike him with the stick.)

Tom: Oh! Aunt Polly! Aunt Polly! Look behind you, Aunt! (Aunt Polly turns away from Tom . Tom runs away.)

Scene 2

Whitewashing the fence

Storyteller 3: Saturday morning comes. It is warm. The sun is bright. The summer is wonderful.

Tom comes with a bucket of whitewash. He is happy. He is singing «My Bonny Is Over the Ocean». Then he looks at the fence. He stops singing and becomes serious. He takes a deep breath and begins painting the fence. Then he moves away from the fence, looks at it, takes a deep breath and sits under the tree. Jim runs out with a bucket (for water) singing and dancing.

Jim: Old McDonald has a farm, EI, EI, O

And on his farm he has some chicks, EI, EI, O.

With a chick, chick here and a chick, chick there.

Tom: Look here, Jim, I`ll bring the water, if you whitewash the fence.

Jim: (Shaking his head) I can`t, Master Tom. Old Mistress told me to go and bring the water. She said, «Master Tom will ask you to whitewash the fence but you do not listen to him and go for water.»

Tom: Oh, never mind what she said. Jimmy, give me the bucket. She won`t ever know. Jimmy, I`ll give you a white marble… And besides I`ll show you my sore toe. ( Tom shows his sore toe and begins removing the bandage. Jim puts the bucket down and stoops to look at Tom`s toe. Aunt Polly appears. She looks at the boys and strikes Jim with her slipper.)

Jim: Oh! Oh! (He runs away with a bucket.)

Aunt Polly: Tom, go on whitewashing the fence!

Tom: Oh, Auntie, I can`t do it… I`m tired. May I whitewash it tomorrow?

Aunt Polly: No, today. Whitewash the fence, I say! (She goes away. Tom begins painting. In a minute he stops and sits under the tree. He takes marbles, green glass and parts of toys out of his pocket.)

Tom: Nobody will work for these things. It`s hot and sunny. The river is blue and bright. Oh, the water is cool. (sadly)I am sure all children will be there. They will go swimming. (He jumps up.) Oh, I have an idea. (He takes the brush and begins whitewashing. Ben Rodgers appears. He is eating an apple and he is moving like a steamboat.)

Ben: Ding-dong, ding-dong, ding-dong (He sees Tom, reduces the speed, stops at the fence. He speaks in different voices.)

Stop her, sir. (captain)

Ting-a-ling-ling. (bell)

Chow-chow-wow. (engine)

Ting-a-ling-ling. (bell)

Let her back on the labboard. Ship up to back. (captain)

Ting-a-ling-ling. (bell)

Stop the labboard. Stop labboard. Set her back. (captain)

Ting-a-ling-ling. (bell)

Chow-chow-chow-wow! (engine)

Stop her! Done with the engine, sir! (captain)

Ting-a-ling-ling. Sh`t, sh`t, sh`t. (bell, engine)

(But Tom doesn`t pay any attention.)

Hi, you, Tom! You must work today?

Tom: Oh, hello! It`s you, Ben, I didn`t notice you.

Ben: I am going swimming, but you must work.

Tom: (Tom stops painting and looks at Ben.) Work? What do you call work?

Ben: What are you doing, then?

Tom: I am whitewashing the fence.

Ben: Isn`t that work?

Tom: Well maybe it is, and maybe it isn`t. (He goes on painting.)

Ben: Don`t pretend you like it.

Tom: Well, of course, I like it. Does a boy have a chance to whitewash the fence every day?

Ben: (Ben stops eating his apple.) Say, Tom. Let me whitewash a little.

Tom: No, I won`t. Jim wanted to do it but Aunt Polly didn`t let him. You see, Aunt Polly is very careful about this fence.

Ben: Aunt Polly didn`t let him. Tom, let me. I`ll give you my apple. I`ll be very careful.

Tom: All right! (Tom takes the apple, sits under the tree, starts eating the apple. Ben starts painting the fence. Billy appears on the stage.)

Billy: Hello, what are you doing?

Ben: Tom and I are whitewashing the fence.

Billy: You don`t think it is interesting, do you?

Ben: We do. It is interesting. You see, Jim wanted to do it, but Aunt Polly didn`t let him.

Billy: Tom, let me whitewash a little. I`ll give you an old knife.

Ben: No, I`ll whitewash the fence. (Ben and Billy begin fighting.)

Tom: Stop that! Now it`s your turn to whitewash, Billy. (Billy gives Tom his old knife and starts painting. Johnny Miller appears on the stage. He has a rat.)

Johnny Miller: Let me whitewash a little, too. (He gives his rat to Tom.)

Tom: Stop, Billy! Now it`s Johnny`s turn. (Several boys want to whitewash the fence. They give Tom something and Tom allows them to paint.)

Storyteller 1: Tom is very rich now. He has a lot of things.

Tom: (happily): Well, I am very rich. I have lots of marbles, a toothbrush, a piece of a bottle glass, a key, a piece of chalk, a kitten with one eye, a rat, a knife, four pieces of orange peel, a dog collar.

Aunt Polly: (Appears on the stage.) Oh, it`s all done! You are a good boy, Tom. You can work when you want to. Now you may go and play. (Goes away.)

Tom: Hurrah! Let`s run to the river.

The boys: Hurrah! Let`s.

Scene 3

Monday morning

It`s morning. There are two beds in the bedroom. Tom and Sid are in their beds. They are sleeping. The girls (Clock) come out of the screen one after another. They sing the song:

Dear boys, dear boys!

Ding-ding-dong,

Ding-ding-dong!

Morning bells are ringing,

Morning bells are ringing,

Ding-ding-dong,

Ding-ding-dong!

Dear Sid, dear Tom!

Ding-ding-dong,

Ding-ding-dong!

Morning bells are ringing,

Morning bells are ringing,

Ding-ding-dong,

Ding-ding-dong!

(The girls leave the stage.)

Sid is sleeping. Tom has already woken up. He is serious. He examines his head, then his stomach, his hands and legs. Suddenly he begins smiling — a tooth.

Storyteller 1: Monday morning came. Tom is sad. He is always sad on Monday morning because he must go to school. The weather is fine. It is warm, and sunny. The sky is blue. It is not cloudy. Tom thought he didn`t want to go to school. Suddenly he has discovered: one of his teeth was loose.

Tom: Sid, Sid! (Sid stirs.) Sid, Sid! (Tom cries louder. Sid sits in his bed and yawns.)

Sid: Tom! What`s the matter, Tom?

Tom: Sid, I am dying! (crying)

Sid: Oh, Tom! Oh, don`t, Tom! Oh, don`t! (Sid runs to Aunt Polly.)

Oh, Aunt Polly, come! Oh, Aunt Polly, come! Tom`s dying!

Aunt Polly: Dying? I don`t think so! (She comes into the room.) You, Tom! What`s the matter?

Tom: It`s my tooth, Auntie. I`m dying. (Aunt Polly sits on the chair and starts laughing.)

Aunt Polly: What`s the matter with your tooth?

Tom: One of them is loose, and I have a terrible toothache.

Aunt Polly: Open your mouth! Your tooth is loose, but you will not die. Sid, give me a long silk thread.

Tom: Oh, Auntie, don`t pull it out. It is better, it`s better! I don`t want to stay at home. I want to go to school.

Aunt Polly: Ah! Now I understand. You wanted to stay at home, and did not want to go to school, but you wanted to go fishing. Oh, Tom. I love you so much, and you break my old heart by your terrible tricks. (Sid brings a silk thread.)

Sid: Here you are.

Aunt Polly: Open your mouth, Tom. Open! I say. (The Old Lady ties the thread to Tom`s tooth, the other end — to… She tries to stretch the thread.)

Aunt Polly: Stand still, Tom. (Tom stands still. The tooth poppes out with the thread.)

Tom: Well, now I can spit in a new and wonderful way. (He spits several times.)

Storyteller 3: Our performance is over. Let us introduce our actors and actresses: Jim…

NARRATOR

Dear guests,

We are happy to show you our school play called “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”. Many of you have read this great book, written by Mark Twain in 1876.

It is about a naughty boy named Tom doing a lot of funny tricks and risky adventures. He grows up in the small town of St. Petersburg standing along the river Mississippi. The children, living there, are excited to watch the steamboats going down the river. They enjoy listening to the music coming from the boats and they happily dance.

AT HOME

AUNT POLLY: Tom? Tom! You -Tom! Where is that boy, I wonder? You-u-u-u Tom!

SID: Tom’s hiding in the fruit cellar, Mother. He’s been into the jam.

AUNT POLLY: Thank you, Sid. (Shouting into the fruit cellar.) You -Tom! Aha, here you are! (She pulls Tom out by an ear.)

TOM : I’ll get you for that, Sid. See if I don’t.

AUNT POLLY : Tom! Look at your hands! And look at your mouth! What is that?

TOM : I don’t know, Aunt Polly

AUNT POLLY : Well, I do. It’s jam -that’s what it is. Forty times I’ve said if you didn’t let that jam alone I’d skin you. Now go and wash your hands and your face!

TOM : My gracious! Look at there, Aunt Polly!

AUNT POLLY (Whirling around and shrieking.) : What is it!

(Tom give one jab to Sid’s belly, two to his ear, jumps up, runs past Sid)

SID : Owww!

AUNT POLLY: Tom !

TOM (Whooping like an Indian.) : Woo- woo- woo- woo- woo- woo- woo!

(He turns and runs off. Aunt Polly stands surprised for a moment, then begins to laugh. Sid is whimpering.)

AUNT POLLY : Oh that boy, can’t I never learn anything? Ah, but old fools is the biggest fools there is.

(To Sid.) Why are you crying, boy? You aren’t going to die from it, I suppose. Now get off with you and get to school.

SI D (Sulking) :Yes, ma’am. (Sid turns and mopes slowly off.)

AUNT POLLY : And make sure Tom gets there, too!

SI D : Oh, yes ma’am, I sure will, ma’am! (He runs out.)

IN THE STREET

Huck: Barley-corn, barley-corn, Devil follow dead body, cat follow devil, warts follow cat…

Tom: Hi Huck! What are you doing here? And what’s that you got in the bag, Huck?

Huck: I’m learning the spell. And this is a dead cat.

Tom: A spell? A dead cat? For what?

HUCK: Cure warts with.

Tom: How do you do it, Huck?

HUCK: Well, you just take your dead cat and go to the graveyard at about midnight. And when it’s midnight, a devil will come, you throw your cat to him and say, » Barley-corn, barley-corn, Devil follow dead body, cat follow devil, warts follow cat, I’m done with you.»

TOM

Say, Huck. When are you going to try that cat?

HUCK : Tomorrow night.

TOM : Can I go with?

HUCK : Of course — if you aren’t afraid.

TOM : I will, Huck, for sure this time. Tomorrow night.

HUCK : Tomorrow night.

MEET AMY

Tom: HELLO, AMY.

Amy: HELLO, TOM…

DEAR, I GET SOMETHING FOR YOU. (Даетемупопробоватьконфету)

Tom: WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN SUCH A LONG TIME? I HAVEN’T SEEN YOU SINCE WE GOT ENGAGED.

Amy: I HAD THE CHICKEN POX.

T: YOU HAVEN’T GOT IT NOW, HAVE YOU?

A: NO, SILLY. THINK, WOULD MY MOTHER LET ME OUT IF I WASN’T ALL CURED?

T: Yeh, I see… WHO’S MOVING IN ACROSS THE WAY?

AMY: I HEARD MA-MA SAY IT WAS THE NEW JUDGE. OH, THAT’S THEIR SILLY LITTLE GIRL. SHE’S AWFUL! MA SENT ME OVER TO PLAY WITH HER, BUT I WOULDN’T. SHE’S TOO UGLY.

NOBODY ROUND HERE’S GOING TO LIKE HER.

Tom: MMM. SAY, AMY? ARE YOU SURE YOU GET OVER?

Amy: YES.

Tom: CERTAIN SURE?

Amy: WHY, YES.WHAT’S THE MATTER?

Tom: YOU LOOK AWFUL PEAKED.

Amy: I DO?

Tom: WHAT ARE THOSE 2 PINK SPOTS ON YOUR CHEEK?

Amy: PINK SPOTS? WHERE?

Tom: HERE,ON YOUR CHEEK. MAYBE IT’S ONLY POISON IVY. YES. MAYBE IT IS.

Amy: BUT I HAVEN’T BEEN OUT OF THE HOUSE. OH! MA! MA! UHH!

Becky’s mother: BECKY! BECKY!

Becky: YES, MAMA?

Tom: UHH!

Sid: TOM’S GOT A GIRL,

TOM’S GOT A GIRL

AT SCHOOL

(The school children are into the schoolroom, noisily taking their seats. Mr. Dobbins appears, R, standing at his desk. He brings his stick down on the desk with a crack and all is silent.)

MR. DOBBINS : Children?

CHILDREN (Sing-song unison.) : Good morning, Mr. Dobbins.

DOBBINS : Sit down… Decent children sit up straight in their seats, like little soldiers.

CHILDREN (Readjusting themselves to imitate little soldiers.) : Yes, sir, Mr. Dobbins.

DOBBINS : Decent children don’t slouch ( сутулиться) in their seats like Sid Harper there. Stand up, Harper

SID (Standing.) : Yes, sir.

DOBBINS : (Standing above him.) Now, class. Is this boy a good little soldier?

CHILDREN (Drearily.) : No, sir.

DOBBINS : No, indeed. Sit down, Harper.

(Sid Harper sits. Mr. Dobbins continues his rounds.)

Oh, oh, oh. I see one Iittle girl who is looking out the window. I am afraid she thinks that I am out there somewhere — perhaps up in one of the trees, making a speech to the little birds . . .

(Mr. Dobbins enjoys his own devastating wit for a moment. Polite titter from the class. Dobbins suddenly interrupts it with a crash of his stick on the desk.)

Silence! (There is silence.)

Sarah Hopkins.! (She pops up out of her seat.)

Spell the word, «latitude.»

SARAH : «Latitude.» L-A-T-I-T-U-D. (Mr. Dobbins harpoons a glance at her.)

E. «Latitude.» (She sits down.)

DOBBINS: Ben Rogers?

(Ben Rogers stands. As he does so, Dobbins turns his back and and two boys on either side of Ben tickle him.)

What is the meaning of the word . . . «latitude.»

Ben:(Trying to recover.) Oh, uh . . . «latitude.» L-A-T-I-T——«

DOBBINS

Ben Rogers!

Ben: Uh, yes sir, Mr. Dobbins? What was it you wanted to know again?

DOBBINS : Sit down, Ben Rogers! You know nothing!

(He attempts to do so, but the boy to his right has placed a ruler on end for Ben to sit on. Ben springs up again.)

DOBBINS: Rogers! :

BEN: Yes, sir.

DOBBINS : Sit down!

Ben (Doing so.) : Yes, sir.

DOBBINS : You will write forty line. «I will not be such a fool in the future.»

Ben: Yes, sir.

DOBBINS : The rest of you. Open your readers to page twenty-one.

(The children open their books and bend over them studiously. In the subsequent hush, Tom Sawyer appears at the top of the uppermost platform.)

Tomas Sawyer! Come up here!

(Tom hesitates)

Thomas Sawyer! Come up here at once! NOW, SIR…

WHY ARE YOU LATE THIS TIME? PERHAPS YOU’D LIKE TO SIT WITH THE GIRLS AGAIN?

TOM:OH, NO, MR. DOBBINS.

MD: THEN I TRUST YOU HAVE AN EXCELLENT EXCUSE?

TOM: I STOPPED TO TALK TO HUCK FINN.

(A gasp from students and teacher alike, and then a dreadful pause.)

DOBBINS

(Quietly, with relish.)

What??? Talk to whom??? TO HUCKLEBERRY FINN???…. This is the most astonishing confession I have ever heard! You will be whipped, boy! You will remain after school to be whipped!

TOM

Yes, sir.

DOBBINS

And now… you can go and sit… with the girls!

(Titter from the class, catcalls as Tom makes his way into the girls’ section. He sits down next to Becky Thatcher and the lights on the school room fade. A thin, lyrical melody from the fiddle.)

TOM : what’s your name?

Becky: Becky Thatcher. What’s yours? Oh, I know. It’s Thomas Sawyer.

Tom: I’m Tom when I’m good. Do you like rats?

Becky: Rats? Of course not! I hate them!

TOM: Oh! Well, of course, I hate them too. Live ones. But I mean, dead ones.

BECKY: No, I don’t care for rats any way. What I like is chewing gum.

TOM : Oh! I wish I had some right now.

BECKY : Do you? I’ve got some. I’ll let you chew it awhile, but you have to give it back.

(The wad of chewing gum changes hands furtively.)

TOM : It’s all right. Say, Becky, have you ever been engaged?

BECKY : What’s that?

TOM : Engaged to be married?

BECKY : I don’t know. What is it like?

TOM : You only tell a boy that you love him forever and ever, and then you kiss and that’s all. It’s easy. Come on, say you love me.

BECKY: No!

TOM : PI ease?

BECKY : . . . Tomorrow.

TOM : No, now.

Becky: OK… ( whisper) I- love -you.

Tom: You see, it’s so nice! When me and Amy Laurence were engage…

Becky: Oh, no… You, Tom! You are engaged with Amy too?… Go away, I don’t want to see you… Never!!!

DOBBINS : Becky Thatcher?

BECKY (Cowering with fright.) : Yes, sir.

DOBBINS : Is this boy bothering you?

BECKY : Oh. Oh, yes! That’s for certain, Mr. Dobbins, he certainly was bothering me . . .

(The action shifts to slow motion and although people’s mouths move, no sound comes out. Mr. Dobbins, in slow motion, shaking Tom back and forth, Becky looking on, a low light on the other school children reveals them laughing, pointing, jeering with grotesque exaggeration.)

DOBBINS : Tomas Sawyer, you’ll be punished . Come here at once. Twenty times!…

Narrator: Tom was miserable.

It seemed to him that his life was nothing but only trouble.

He wanted to die and pass into a better world

Oh, she would be sorry some day- they’d all be sorry — when it was too late.

Tom went to bed that night wishing that he could die — but temporarily, temporarily . . .

TOM’S DREAM

Tom is in bed. His vision.

Doc ROBINSON: I’m sorry, Aunt Polly. I’m afraid there’s nothing more we can do. He was a splendid boy.

( Doc. leaves. Aunt Polly kneels beside Tom’s bed.)

Aunt P: Oh, Tom, Tom-don’t leave us now! I’m sorry for all those scoldings I gave you. Tom-please, please…

Tom ( in a faint voice): That doesn’t matter now. I know you liked Sid best and I don’t blame you.

AP: No, Tom, no!

Tom: I forgive you, forgive you all.

AP: Sid, Go and sit in the cellar!

Sid: Why? Mummy, please…

AP: Go! Now!

Mr. Dobbins: Thomas Sawyer was the best student I have ever had! Oh, if only I haven’t treated him so badly! ( crying)

AP: Ahhh! Here SHE comes!

Becky: Oh, Tom, I didn’t want to be so cruel! I love you, Tom, forever and ever! I’ve brought you a present, Tom.

It’s a package of chewing gum and a dead rat. Please, Tom. ( Том тянет руку к подарку, А тетя легонько хлопает его по руке)

AP: Tom, wake up, you, lazy boy. Becky has sent you an invitation for the picnic. It is on Sunday morning.

Tom: Hooray! I am alive and SHE is not angry with me any more!

Aunt Polly, I love you. You are my dear aunty!… I’m going to the picnic with Becky! Hooray!
